POST #12 – LECTURE – DADA - SCULPTURE AND RELATED MOVEMENTS
During class, we reviewed more newer forms of art in the world. We explored the beginning of Futurism with some of Boccioni work. It was stated that much of this movement was influenced by Etienne-Jules Marey and his work with movement. Artists such as Giacomo Balla, were able to paint in a way that created movement in their works of art. However, the most interesting part of the lecture was the Dada movement in the twentieth century. Dadaism or Dada is an art movement characterized by irreverence, subversion, and nonsense. However, most artists during this time were mainly anti-war and leftist. This movement was mainly inspired by other avant-garde such as Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism, and Expressionism. During this time, many artists were challenging the notion of what and what wasn’t art. The most iconic piece during this time was Duchamp Fountain in 1917. This piece was entered into an art gallery that claimed that every form of art was accepted. However, when Marcel Duchamp entered the piece under a false name, the piece was denied entry into the gallery. Since then, the toilet piece has become a staple in the art community for its history.
