POST #16 – LECTURE - ELECTRONIC MEDIA and PERFORMANCE
Today, we explored Electronic Media in class. Electric Media is known as media that uses electricity (radio, TV, internet, ext.). The first known form of this was Samael F. B. Morse. He was able to send the message "What hath God wrought?" via Telegraph. This message started the electronic media craze in the United States. Years later in 1901, Guglielmo Marconi was the first to send wireless telegrams. He was able to send a single letter S across the Atlantic ocean and he won a Nobel prize for this work in 1909. Later on in 1938, Orson Wells was able to change the face of radio forever. On radio, he directed an adaptation of "War of the Worlds". However, this caused a mass panic in the country due to how realistic Wells made it sound. On March 25, 1925, John Logie Baird set up the first known mechanical television in a department store in London. He was able to create this by casting a silhouette from across the room. Baird was able to send these silhouettes across the store. Later in 1925, Baird moved his work from ventriloquist to human faces. However, Baird's system wasn't able to capture human faces because of the inadequate contrasts. In 1927, Philo Farnswoth was able to create the first electric television and he later demonstrated it in 1928. Overall, I found this lecture to be very interesting in the fact that it took a long time before humans were finally able to create a working television set. In the end, the television was a creation that many took a part in creating.
