POST #6 – LECTURE BAROQUE THEATRE – MODERN OPERA
While comparing the Baroque Theater to the Colosseum, I found that a difference between them is prices. Since the Colosseum was paid by the emperor, the theater was directly funded by patreons. This is shown by having the theater being smaller. By having the theater smaller, only people with high status could pay to get in. With this money, the theater could pay for mechanisms to further create the illusion of fantasy. The Colosseum used a similar idea with the hegmata. The hegmata was used to host elephants or other animals into the Colosseum. However, the Baroque Theater used machines to create special effects to add to their operas. This idea of having machines help with theater carried over in today’s theater. Today, crews use lights and sets to help convey emotions to audiences. For example, if a character was feeling sad, the crew would color the stage with dark, blue light.
