POST #8 – LECTURE – RENAISSANCE MODERN AND ABSTRACT ART
During our lecture, we discussed the evolution of art and how art is shaped throughout the years. In this session, we saw the change of art in the industrial revolution. One of the main reasons why art changed during this time was because of the patron and critics. Since there weren't enough commissions or critics restricting what could be art. Many artists were free to explore different ways of art. Post- Impressionism was born during this. Artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Monet painted pictures similar to reality; however, the painting captured a different style to the work. As the years went on, many paintings began to capture emotions or feelings such as the Spirit of the Dead Watching by Gauguin. In this painting, it reflected the fear of the dead stalking the halls of their home. However, others have stated that this painting represented the wife's fear of what her husband might do to her. During class, he learned more about another form of art which is abstract expressionism. Greenberg was known for his ideal that abstract art had no interpretation. The common phrase of “what you see is what you get” describes what real abstract art meant to Greenberg.
