Discussion- I believe that the Phantom of the Opera is not an Opera. The main difference between a musical and an opera is the speaking lines. In an opera, all the characters sing instead of speaking any of the lines. However, in a musical that isn’t the case. While most musicals have singing, they also have speaking lines. Throughout the narrative of Phantom of the Opera, there are times when various characters talk normally. This idea of the Phantom on the Opera being an opera is a misconception. The problem is that the musical setting takes place in an opera house. Due to the setting and the name of one of the main characters, many believe that on first looks that Phantom of the Opera is an opera. While the characters sing songs similar to what you would find in an opera house, they do have speaking lines. Overall, Phantom of the Opera is a musical.
